Romans 2:6

God “will give to each person according to what he has done.”  To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

I have a thought that has been playing through my mind more and more often.  In this daydream, I picture myself in Heaven, and then someone taps me on the shoulder.  Here’s one version: “Excuse me John, my name is Chad, and I’d like to thank you for something you did.”  I don’t have any idea who Chad is, but that’s what makes this so special.  “I know you don’t know me, but let me tell you about an incident that happened about 100 years ago.  One Sunday a member of the Gideons came to your church to speak about the distribution of Bibles in foreign countries.  He gave a very moving talk, and you contributed some money to buy Bibles.  Do you remember?”  If I had any memory at all, it would be very faint, so all I can do is ask Chad to continue his story.   “My family was given one of those Bibles, and I began to read it.  We were poor, so that was about all I had to do.   My parents weren’t Christians, so we didn’t have a Bible in the house.  I went on to read and understand that Bible, and not only did I become a Christian, I was able to lead my entire family to Christ.”

Far-fetched?  Maybe, but I honestly believe that any Christian who is actively trying to work for Jesus on this earth will one day feel a tap on the shoulder.  I could create some very logical scenarios that might fit your life.  How about this one for you school teachers:  “Excuse me, Mrs. Franklin, my name is Beth, and I want to thank you for something you did for me back in the 4th grade.  My mom was dead, and my father was an alcoholic.  You took me under your wing and made me feel special.  I couldn’t wait to get to school in the morning and see your warm smile.  When you hugged me I felt like I was the most special girl in the world.  Even though I was transferred to a new school the next year, you made a big difference in my life.  I went on to become a teacher myself, and I took children in just like you did.”  About this time Beth gets a tap on her shoulder, and a man begins to tell his story: “That’s right Mrs. Franklin, Beth did go on to become a wonderful teacher and role model, and I’m here to give her a hug for all of the love she showed to me.”  Can you begin to get a tiny glimpse of the dynamic connections here?  I’m reminded of a hymn I like.  It goes something like this: “It only takes a spark to get a fire going.  And soon all those around will warm-up in its glowing.”

I’m a big believer in random acts of kindness, and I also believe that Heaven is the place to be rewarded.  The Bible tells us that whenever we do a good deed on earth and proclaim it, we get our benefit here on earth.  We’re told to keep our good deeds quiet and store-up Heavenly treasure.   Help a total stranger and feel the glow.   Offer a kind word to someone you’ve never met and have a great day for your kindness.  I’m telling you, God’s plan for us will blow your mind if you just give it a try.

1 John 2:17

The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

And so, my friend, who might be tapping on your shoulder one day?  Praise God!
